Writing press releases that work
Our ‘writing press releases that work’ session is designed to aid participants in: understanding the role and function of a press release; identifying ideas that would be worthy of a press release; drafting a press release and following up with journalists. The course guides participants on the accepted rules for writing and issuing press releases and targeting effectively. We help participants to assess their past experience and areas in which they can improve. The course requires all participants to provide a pre-written press release for assessment so that support can be tailored to specific needs.
Our training session covers a number of areas including:
- identifying the need for a press release – testing the ‘news’ value
- press release content
- press release style and tone
- structuring the press release
- target press and media - research
- issuing, ‘selling in’ and following up your press release
- after the press release – next steps.
Our training session equips participants with the skills to recognise whether a press release is the right tool to use and the other tools that are available.
We focus on practical exercises – working with participants to identify ‘news value’ that is directly relevant to their own organisation and communication goals. A detailed manual supports the coaching session and includes checklists to guide conversations with journalists and help with ‘selling in’ stories.
Our coaching sessions are available in small groups or for individuals and are tailored to specific needs.
