Understanding what journalists want and how they work

Our training session on ‘understanding what journalists want and how they work’ gives participants an understanding of how journalists think. It shows them what drives the ‘news’ agenda and how they can tailor their material to have the best chance of getting press and media attention and coverage. We use brainstorming techniques and practical exercises to help participants ‘get inside the mind’ of a journalist.

Our coaching session covers a number of areas including:

  • understanding the news agenda
  • drafting materials with impact
  • essential press release writing tips
  • researching the press and media
  • how to approach the journalists you are targeting
  • ‘Selling in’ a news story to journalists
  • Building a contacts list
  • Building a profile outside the press release.

We show participants how to improve their confidence in approaching journalists. Our training session equips participants with the tools to maximise their own PR and get more back from their efforts.

A detailed manual supports the training session and includes easy reference checklists to support participants after the session. Our training session is available in small groups or for individuals and can be tailored to specific needs.
